FOREWORD – MICKY HOUGH, GOLF DIRECTOR
Dear Members and Residents
There are exciting changes happening in the world of golf!
Change in the Handicap system on the 3rd of September and change to the Golf Rules effective from the 1st of January 2019 worldwide.
We urge you to familiarise yourself with these changes. We’ve included a summary of the new handicap system (see below) and you can also find more details on the HNA website here.
Visit The R&A and USGA Websites on www.usga.org and www.randa.org Both give excellent explanations of the new golf rules for 2019. There will be a rules seminar held on the 24-25 November 2018 at Durban Country Club. Please contact me for more details. All golfers are encouraged to register and learn!
I hope you’ve enjoyed watching our very own Brandon Stone’s recent golfing performances on the world stage. He won the Scottish Open and came a very respectable 12th in the PGA (his best finish in a major to date!). We wish him well and hope to see him continue this good form.
Keep up the good golf
The greens on the Lakes have responded fairly well to treatments and should provide a good putting surface in winter. The challenges are with individual greens that need different treatments to achieve consistency over the whole course.
The 6 x Paspalum greens that were sprigged last year with Cynodon “royal blue” (same grass as all the other greens on the Lakes) have grown well this past year. We have done this again so we can expect the transition to full Cynodon greens to be accelerated this year.
Nematode assays have revealed that the greens on the Lakes will also need a comprehensive nematode control program this coming season.
The new greens that were planted last year continue to improve and have gone into winter looking like some of the best greens out of them all.
Our challenge right now is to keep a good putting surface whilst we experience the unsightly and fast-growing poa annual proliferate on the greens. We are working hard to keep all the greens putting smoothly.
